Despite that Pythagoreanism ceases to exist today, the ancient religion and philosophy still had much effect on what we know today in all sorts of areas-- mathematics, astronomy, science, music, and more. Though Pythagoras is not a widely known or discussed figure and little is written about him, it would come as a suprise to realize how different the world would be without his wisdom and discovery.
MATHEMATICS-the most recognized legacy Pythagoras has left us are his studies in mathematics. His name is given to the Pythagorean Theorem, and though he didn't develop the theorem itself, his wisdom was the pool from which its true developers took from in order to derive it. Pythagoreans were also said to be the beginning influence of axiomatic geometry, an important field of mathematics that was later written down by Euclid in the well-known text The Elements.
PHILOSOPHY-some of the most prominent philosophers were Pythagorean-- one of the best-known is Plato, whose works are believed to be heavily influenced by Pythagoras. Many peope take Platonic concepts as originally Pythagorean. If that is proved so, then Pythagoreanism had an immense impact on Western thought.
MUSIC-without Pythagoras' comparison of the planets to musical tones, we wouldn't have the basic musical scale of today. It is uncommonly known that Pythagoras was a staple in the history of music itself.
RIGHTS OF WOMEN-during a time when everyone looked upon women as possessions, Pythagoras allowed women into his school and they were treated just as equally as men. This no doubt started a shift of opinion in the Western world concerning the role of females, and still has effect on what our world is like today. However, though women were accepted as students, the aspect of femininity was still looked upon as being a state inferior to masculinity.
VEGETARIANISM-before the term "vegetarian" came about, one who abstained from eating meat was called a Pythagorean. Pythagoreans are the earliest vegetarians known to date.
